What is a SCAC Code?

The Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC) is a unique two-to-four-letter code issued by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) to identify transportation companies. This code is widely used by U.S. Customs, freight brokers, government agencies, and shippers to track, manage, and authorize carriers in shipping systems and electronic data interchange (EDI) processes.

Who Needs a SCAC Code?

You may be required to obtain a SCAC Code if:

  • You transport international freight across U.S. borders

  • You are a customs-bonded carrier, freight forwarder, or rail carrier

  • You work with U.S. government contracts (e.g., DoD, GSA)

  • You operate in intermodal or ocean container transportation

  • A broker or shipper specifically requires it for EDI compatibility

Even if not federally required, many large brokers and shippers will not assign freight without a valid SCAC Code on file.

Why Is It Important?

A SCAC Code:

  • Identifies your company in customs clearance systems

  • Helps prevent delays in freight processing

  • Allows participation in EDI communications and automated tracking

  • Signals to partners that you are a recognized and professional carrier
